The Telegraph has a wonderful slideshow of soldiers’ kits from British history, what the U.S. Army used to call (unhelpfully) “TA-50.” It’s my understanding that these kits always ended up weighing about 70 pounds, whether you were a hoplite from ancient Greece or a paratrooper in Desert Storm.
